Description
The Contessa 32 was first built in England at the Jeremy Rogers Ltd yard. When introduced at the London boat show of 1973, it was awarded "Boat of the Show". Since then, the yard built over 700. In 1973, Rogers had a hull and deck shipped from Britain so that a set of molds for production in Canada could be created. A total of 87 boats were built in Canada. (until 1990). The fiberglass lay-up of the Canadian-built boat is of the same high standard as the British boats.
This particular vessel has had a considerable amount of attention paid to it. The entire deck, cabin top, and hull were refinished in 2019. Not only is it entirely absent of rot, delamination, or damage, it absolutely gleams. You’ll find a stainless-steel outboard engine crane, a man-overboard pole, and an insulated backstay installed, good for anyone looking to do long passages. There are five sails in the inventory. Also, there is a “Hydrovane” brand windvane installed. This is a lovely piece of kit that has an excellent reputation for rugged durability, and the added advantage of acting as a backup rudder. The cockpit is generous without crowding the interior. There are lovely touches of tradition sprinkled about: a beautiful wooden steering wheel, brass dorades on the cabin top, brass lion drawer-pulls in the saloon.
Inside, accommodations are traditional and comfortable. It can sleep six in a pinch, but more realistically this is a “cocktails for six, dinner for four, and sleep two” type of boat. She has a wide V-berth with ample storage all around. There is a beautiful diesel heater mounted on the saloon bulkhead that will provide a dry, even heat on cold, wet Westcoast days.
This boat has a bit of a cult-following, for good reason. She’s known to be an excellent sailor, both as a racer and a cruiser. She’s the perfect boat for the Salish Sea and beyond.
Come and see for yourself. You’ll be glad you did.
