Boat Review by: Richard Crowder
Cobalt Boats says its A-Series is their “ultimate luxury offering.” It rides on Cobalt’s proven extended running surface deep-vee design of all composite construction with Kevlar hull reinforcement on a full nine-foot beam. It is instantly recognizable in profile by the new look of its optional hardtop if so equipped.
Boarding the A29 is easily facilitated via its extended swim platform equipped with Cobalt’s centre flip down swim step. This platform may be upgraded with hydraulic assist and can be overlaid with teak or Sof-Trac Mat and a platform ladder. When docked on the starboard side, you can step directly onto the walk-thru transom access which is next to the very large transom sunpad.
The headrest of the stern L-shaped portside lounge seat flips forward to convert this sunpad into sunlounge. Opposite the helm seat, the seatback of the starboard L-shaped lounge flips forward to create an aft-facing lounge, or flips back to become the backrest of the forward-facing passenger seat.
A starboard side bench seat aft of the helm seat completes the cockpit seating. Finished storage is found beneath all seating with dedicated storage under the starboard bench seat for the removable cooler. Additional storage is found beneath the aft portion of the transom sunpad and is accessible from the swim platform.
Walk-thru access to the unique bow seating area is via a portside opening windshield section. A rear-facing two person bench seat at the bow faces a forward-facing larger bench seat ahead of the helm console. This seat is equipped with outer flip-down armrests plus a pull-down centre armrest. This bow area may be converted to a huge sunlounge with the addition of an optional bow table and filler cushion. A bow walk-thru door is standard, as is an in-floor storage compartment and foredeck anchor locker.
With the wider beam of the A29 and the bow walk-thru on the portside, more room is provided within the helm console to accommodate a day cabin consisting of a seating area with a standard porta-potti. Additional cushions are available to convert this area into a berth and a sink is also available, as is a porcelain electric toilet.
The adjustable double-wide helm seat may be electrically operated as an option. It faces a very plush Cobalt dash with custom stitched composite helm eyebrow and a custom leather-wrapped steering wheel colour matched to your choice of interior accenting. Dual Garmin 8610 Glass Cockpit touchscreens are standard, as are an hour meter and depth and water/air temperature gauge package. A Bluetooth compatible stereo package with iPod, USB, and MP3 ports with six speakers and dash remote is standard. This may be upgraded to a Premium or Platinum system with transom remote and arch or hardtop speakers.
Standard floor covering throughout is snap-in carpet. This may be upgraded to Sea Grass, Sof-Trac Marine Mat, or teak flooring. Other notable standard features include a cockpit in-floor waterski locker, eighteen stainless steel cupholders, twelve USB and two 12-volt receptacles, waterski pylon, trash receptacle, four fender clips, and an electric engine hatch.
Notable options include bow, cockpit, and mooring covers, a Makassar interior trim package, cockpit galley package with sink and refrigerator, a Soft-Side cooler, four or ten weighted throw pillows, teak cockpit table, docking lights, LED interior accent lighting, transom and/or underwater lighting, transom shower and/or tilt switch, and a compressor-driven Webasto cabin and cockpit air conditioning.
You may add a bimini top or, most notably, a manual or electric folding aluminum arch with bimini or rotating sunshade. You can also choose the striking hardtop with or without an electric awning. A portable bow sunshade is also available. You may also want a bow thruster, anchor windlass, trim tabs, automatic fire extinguishing, battery charger, Zero-Off cruise control, wakeboard racks, wireless phone charging, satellite radio, dual 12-inch Garmin screens, or a Siren Connected Boat Package.
Of course the piece de resistance upgrade is Cobalt’s exclusive Splash & Tow system which, along with the air compressor electrically unrolls a large floating inflatable mat from the transom you can have immense fun with, then later deflate and electrically retract.
Power for your Cobalt A29 is provided by your choice of Volvo Penta V8-380 or 430 EVC with Duo-Prop, or MerCruiser 380 or 430 hp 8.2 Magnum DTS with Bravo Three. Eleven exterior colour choices are available as are several interior accenting colour choices. Yes, the A29 is all Cobalt says it is and perhaps even more.
