Boat Review by: Richard Crowder
The HD 180 OB (outboard) may be the smallest, along with its sterndrive powered sistership HD 180, of ten models in Four Winns’ Hybrid Deck Boat (HD) series. That being said, it delivers many of the same features and benefits of the largest in the series, the HD 270 and HD 270 OB, just on a smaller scale. All ten models are also available with the added “RS” nomenclature which adds a package of exterior and interior graphics and enhancements along with a lower and sportier tinted windshield design.
Four Winns offers a comprehensive lineup of forty-seven models from eighteen to thirty-five feet in four series; Horizon Bowriders, Hybrid Deck Boats, and Cruisers, almost all available with either sterndrive or outboard power, along with a Surf Boat series powered by the Volvo Penta Forward Drive.
The HD 180 OB rides on Four Winns’ patented Stable-Vee® running surface with stepped, angled “After Pods” designed to “minimize bow rise at slow speeds and reduce drag at high speeds to maximize acceleration, visibility, and operating efficiency” and to provide “better lateral stability while running or at rest.”
It has a family-friendly yet sporty layout with a pair of adjustable, swivel ComfortRide high back bucket seats with side bolstering and forward flip-up bolsters for the driver and front passenger. An L-shaped bench seat extends from just aft of the passenger bucket and then across the stern while leaving room for a starboard side transom walk-thru to the swim platform. Full surrounding U-shaped bow seating with coaming padded backrests for three and with console-face padded backrests providing stretch-out comfortable lounging on each side.
Anchor storage is provided beneath the centre bow seat cushion while general storage is found beneath the two side hinged bow seat cushions. More storage is found beneath the cockpit L-shaped bench seat cushions including dedicated storage for the optionally available portable bow telescoping boarding ladder. This ladder mounts on the extra-wide flat and unobstructed foredeck area which can then double as a bow swim platform.
An in-floor watersports accessory storage compartment with gas strut assist and bottom mat is located between the driver and passenger seats. The helm console of the HD 180 OB features a modern and functional dash with top-stitch detail, a deluxe tilt steering wheel, and two custom large diameter multi-function, fog resistant digital, chrome-rimmed gauges with an hour meter and GPS speedometer.
The head unit for the standard AM/FM stereo with Bluetooth® compatibility, auxiliary input, and a pair of speakers is protected behind the lockable lid of the passenger console glove box. Within this glove box are a 12-volt DC power outlet and a pair of USB ports.
The integrated swim platform has a recessed telescoping boarding ladder. Four Winns offers seven standard choices of hullside only or full hull side and bottom colours. The same seven choices plus Cognac (tan) are available for the hullside tapered accent stripe (bootstripe). There are also four standard interior accenting colour combinations from which to choose.
A Four Winns® custom-matched bunk trailer with jack-stand and swing-away tongue is also standard. Power is available from your choice of Evinrude, Mercury, or Yamaha outboards from 90 to 150 horsepower. Hydraulic steering is optionally available if you choose a 150 horsepower motor.
Notable options include a Premium Sound Package with both a transom and a helm remote, Bazooka subwoofer, two bow speakers, and an interior LX Package in Ash or Dune which provides pull-up cleats, a bow scuff plate, removable reed mat flooring, and a Sunbrella® bimini top with changing room.
To this LX Package you may then add an SLX Package in Grey or Espresso / Teak which provides swim platform mats, bow fill-in cushions, hinged bow walk-thru wind doors, and Sunbrella® bow and cockpit covers. Many of the packaged items are available as individual options. A Salt Water Edition Package could well appeal to fresh water boaters with its stainless steel steering wheel with knob, rod/beverage holders, in-floor rod storage locker, and saltwater edition graphic.
Additional single item available options include a hinged, fold-down wakeboard tower with colour-matched bimini top, a pair of deck or tower mount board racks, bow anchor roller, cockpit removable Marine Mat flooring in grey or espresso/teak, cockpit table with mount, and several trailer upgrades and accessories including a trailer delete option.
The HD 180 OB may be the smallest deck boat in Four Winns’ lineup but it provides all of the essentials of family relaxation and enjoyment as larger deck boats do but on a smaller scale.
