G3, a Yamaha Boat Company, offers four series of SunCatcher pontoon boats and another four series of aluminum fishing boats of which the Sportsman series is one. There are nineteen models in all in this Sportsman series from sixteen to twenty-four feet of which this model 1710 is the best selling model of all. Almost half of the nineteen Sportsman models are designated as “Camo” meaning they come with camouflaged paint schemes just in case hunting is also one of your passions.

The Sportsman series are all-welded serious fishing machines and are designed for and dedicated to hardcore fishing enthusiasts. They all have huge casting decks fore and aft of a roughly centrally positioned helm and every feature is designed to augment your fishing experience. Some are side console designs. Some are full walk-thru windshield dual console designs. The 1710 is a side console design.

The hull of the Sportsman 1710 is of all-welded .100 gauge aluminum with high gloss urethane paint on the outside available in your choice of Black Metallic or Burgundy with hullside graphics. Inside is your choice of marine grade 18-ounce full carpeting or an easy-care full vinyl covering.

The huge, flat bow casting deck totals over 33 square feet in area, the aft portion of which is dedicated to and filled with lockable storage. To port is an organized rod storage compartment, in the center, a large general storage locker, and to starboard immediately ahead of the driver’s side console is a dedicated storage compartment for the standard portable cooler. Even the wide step up from the cockpit sole to the bow casting deck has a flip-up lid with storage within.

Centered on this bow casting deck ahead of the storage compartments is an in-floor base providing not one, but two mounting positions for one of the two provided high back folding fishing seats on pedestals, located to allow flexible positioning for comfortable access to the dedicated recessed trolling motor foot control housing. This in-deck housing includes a cup holder and tool slots. Immediately ahead of this is the raised trolling motor platform to which is mounted the standard Minn Kota® 55 Edge™, 12-volt, trolling motor with a 45-inch shaft. A 24-volt Minn Kota® trolling motor is optionally available.

The cockpit of the Sportsman 1710 offers three across seating, the outer two being of larger and wider high-back design with flip-forward seat cushions providing access to under seat storage. The smaller center seat has a flip-down backrest providing a step up to the stern casting platform.

A standard custom sporty tilt steering wheel faces what G3 refers to as a molded suspended driver’s helm console which is not only very modern looking, attractive, and functional but is also designed to offer more foot and legroom. Centered within this console which comes complete with a tinted windscreen is the standard equipment Lowrance® five-inch Hook² 5X GPS screen with fishfinder capabilities. This may be upgraded with a Lowrance® five or seven inch COMBO unit.

Flanking this screen on each side is a large circular Yamaha multi-gauge providing speedometer, tachometer, fuel, and motor trim readouts. Several 4-stroke Yamaha outboard power choices are available from 40 to 90 horsepower. Your choice of motors will include as standard equipment the ability to trim it from three different onboard locations. Both a driver’s side and a passenger side cupholder are readily within reach of the two outboard cockpit seats.

The stern casting deck is almost as large as the bow casting deck and contains a centrally recessed large recirculating, aerated livewell measuring 15-inches by 45-inches with a capacity of 33 (US) gallons and comes complete with a pumpout, divider, and insulated lid. Flanking this livewell on both sides are in-deck storage compartments suitable for tackle. Four standard-supplied tackle trays are sized to fit one of these compartments. Just aft of these compartments is a centrally located mounting base for the second standard high back folding fishing seat on a pedestal.

Other notable standard equipment on the Sportsman 1710 includes a “precision fit” black powder coated Trail Guard® trailer with locking detachable tongue and aluminum wheels, an onboard 2-bank battery charger, and automatic bilge pump. Available optional equipment includes a galvanized or aluminum trailer upgrade, a bike seat with adjustable pedestal, a transom mount eight or ten foot Power Pole®, plus three choices of Lowrance® bow mount GPS/fishfinder screens.

With its very complete complement of standard equipment most desired by the fishing enthusiast, it’s easy to see why this Sportsman 1710 is a popular seller.
