Boat Review by: Richard Crowder
SunCatcher, a Yamaha Boat Company, offers 34 models of pontoon boats from sixteen to twenty-six feet in four series. The V22 CC , subject of this review, is part of the V-series of fifteen models and is a brand new model for 2019 and the first ever center console pontoon boat to be offered by SunCatcher.
The V22 CC, at twenty-two feet, six inches length overall (deck length not including motor) has a rated capacity for eleven persons so it is obviously designed to accommodate family outings and cruising. However, its main focus and its features and strengths, in the tradition of parent company G3’s extensive offerings of dedicated aluminum fishing machines, is a focused emphasis on fishing. Thus a most versatile and flexible pontoon offering.
To this end of accommodating the fishing enthusiast, the centre console design allows those fishing on board to move virtually unobstructed around the entire perimeter of the deck while fighting and landing their favourite species. Four standard high back folding and swivel fishing chairs on removable pedestals are each located relatively close to each of the four corners of the deck thus allowing lots of space for unobstructed casting and trolling.
To appeal not only to the fishing enthusiast but also to others in the family who may be more recreational and cruising inclined, SunCatcher offers three metallic exterior colour choices to which you add eight choices of exterior colour graphics along with six choices of interior accent colour choices, four canvas colour choices, and an amazing fifteen choices of interior floor covering options including carpet, vinyl, “teak”, and Seagrass.
The bow area of the V22 CC, comprising almost half the area of the on board deck space, is a fisherman’s delight. The bow fence extends to within a few short inches of the deck meaning less chance of snagging a fishing line and the only seating is provided by the two fishing chairs. Beside each of these chairs and within easy reach is a vertical rod holder to accommodate three fishing rods each.
Immediately ahead of each of these seats, and again within easy reach, is an oval-shaped storage compartment neatly tucking into each forward fence corner. The portside compartment is dedicated to general storage while the starboard side compartment houses a 14-inch by 19-inch aerated livewell with a 10 (US) gallon capacity.
The molded and functional centre console offers a high back, adjustable captain’s chair with folding armrests facing a custom steering wheel to which you may add Bay Star® hydraulic steering. The dash offers four Faria gauges; two large ones for tachometer and speedometer flanking two smaller gauges for fuel and motor trim. Below these and to the left is the control for the standard MP3 compatible Jensen® stereo with iPod® and Bluetooth® connectability. A 12-volt DC accessory outlet is supplied. More storage is found within this console.
Yamaha outboard power is available from 70 to a maximum of 115 horsepower on this two-log pontoon boat. The logs are 23-inches by 25-inches and filled with closed-cell flotation foam. You may optionally add a performance shield and lifting strakes. If you want (or need) more power, perhaps opt for the model V322 CC (designating the third centre log) which gives you thicker gauge logs plus heavier gauge nosecones plus a maximum horsepower rating up to 225.
To starboard of the centre console is a fence-mounted organized horizontal rod holder compartment with hinged lid. Aft of the centre console are port and starboard inward facing Roto-molded two person couches with storage beneath the seat cushions plus rain draining channels to keep contents dry. Aft of these couches are the two fishing seats and centred on the transom fence ahead of the motor is a stern fishing centre complete with a 17-inch by 19-inch aerated livewell with a 12 (US) gallon capacity plus rod holders and storage.
Aft of the stern starboard side entry gate is a swim deck complete with a four-step telescoping stainless steel boarding ladder. Other notable standard equipment includes floor level courtesy lights, pre-wiring for a 12-volt trolling motor, and a bimini top with storage boot. Notable available options include a powder coated or galvanized tandem axle trailer, a Minn Kota® 55PD/US12-volt 54-inch shaft trolling motor, Simrad® or Lowrance® GPS/fishfinder, bimini radar arm, bow bimini, mooring cover, refreshment centre with cooler, speaker upgrade, and a ski tow bar.
The G3 SunCatcher V22 CC almost defines flexibility and functionality with fabulous fishing features plus lots of amenities for recreation and cruising.
