Boat Review by: Rick Layzell
Regal takes close to 50 years of quality engineering and craftsmanship and rolls it all into the 2000 ES design. While she may be one of the smallest in the Regal fleet, she’s no slouch on user friendly features and family focused benefits.
The Fastrac hull entered the Regal line in 1995 and this proven design delivers incredible results still today. With a full beam step, dynamic lifting strakes and reversed chines this technology means you get phenomenal performance in your 2000 ES. The innovative beam step is engineered to channel air under the hull which in turn reduces drag and friction – your benefit is incredible hole shots and great cruising speeds. The Fastrac design also allows Regal to install smaller engine platforms meaning you get great fuel economy. The lifting strakes and reversed chines mean outstanding performance.
The 2000 ES features an array of colour choices so you can design your boat to suit your specific tastes. There are currently 11 gel coat colour options for hull side, boot stripe and hull bottom. Note that all of these are gelcoat options – while many brands use vinyl decals, even the boot stripe on your Regal is in mold gelcoat.
The craftsmanship exudes quality at every turn on the 2000 ES with extensive use of 316 grade stainless hardware, LED cockpit lighting and premium upholstery.
The transom of the 2000 ES features and 3 step stainless re-boarding ladder tucked neatly into the swim platform, the optional colour matched Sea Deck is a great accent to the platform and the cockpit itself. You’ll find a ski tow eye on the platform, sturdy 6” stainless cleats on either side for tying up at the dock (total of 6 cleats is standard) and the multi position sun pad is a great spot to lounge and relax. The sun pad features a flip up back rest and the cushion on the starboard side raises easily to open up a walk thru into the cockpit.
The cockpit is adorned with handcrafted upholstery the likes of which you’ll rarely find in a 20’ model. Featuring diamond stitching, multi-colour and multi texture materials the upholstery of the 2000 ES is simply outstanding. The Social Seating design affords passengers the ability to move the multi position backrest on the passenger side with ease so you can readily face forward or lounge aft – whatever your heart and the moment desire most.
Storage is abundant, and all storage lockers feature RTM hatches (Resin Transfer Molded) which are nicely finished on both sides. Bow storage incorporates Regals’ StoreMore design adding even more storage to the 2000 ES. There’s a standard trash receptacle and a pair of 25-quart Igloo coolers on board for your use as well.
The vinyl wrapped dash features a full complement of Faria gauges and a digital depth sounder. There’s a 12-volt accessory plug, a cell phone ready storage compartment and a very sporty feeling 5 position tilt steering wheel. The helm seat itself is generous in size and felt sturdy with a flip up bolster and lumbar support. All water-resistant toggle switches are at your finger tips as is the Fusion marine sound system. You’ll also appreciate the 6 standard speakers on the 2000 ES.
Even the windshield gets the Regal touch with rugged yet elegant one-piece stainless windshield stanchions and an aluminum windshield header. The standard bimini top is dressed with Sunbrella canvas and stainless bows.
The 2000 ES was designed to suit families who keep the boat at the dock all summer as well as those who store her in the garage during the week. To that end her overall height on a trailer is a very modest 6’ 5” meaning she’ll readily fit inside most garages.
Family features are clearly visible on this model with a total of 10 drink holders, extensive stainless hand rails, a lockable glove box, MarineTred non-skid flooring for easy clean ups and a very appealing 30 inches of cockpit depth at the helm – a nice safety feature for families with small children.
As we moved out to testing on a calm waters day with temps nearing 30 degrees C, the 260 HP Volvo V6 performed very well in all testing elements. We had 2 slightly over sized men on board, an array of camera and safety gear and a full 150 liter tank of fuel. At the outset the benefits of Fastrac hull was very noticeable delivering exceptional hole shots at an average of 3.64 seconds. We logged comfortable cruising speeds of 24 MPH @ 3,400 RPM and 28 MPH @ 3,800 RPM. With light winds we clipped along finding top speeds on my GPS of 48 MPH @ 5,800 RPM. As any boater knows your own test results will vary based on weather, guests and gear. Take the time you need to find your own perfect combinations.
Once the time trials were completed I was able to put her through a variety of paces, twists and turns. The results were excellent as she proved to be a winner in hard turns, elegant in multiple take off efforts and she down thrusted off plane reentering the sitting position with grace.
All in all Regals’ 2000 ES is a strong performer. She screams quality and delivers confident and consistent results. As this family run company moves to its next generation of ownership there’s little doubt that Regal is steeply entrenched in the values that Paul & Carol Kuck laid as the foundation when Regal began building boats back in 1969. And if that’s not enough the Regal factory is located close to the Orlando, Florida airport and they welcome owners and prospective owners to schedule a visit to see for yourself just how strongly they take their commitment to quality and craftsmanship.
