Boat Review by: Richard Crowder
Yamaha’s refreshed 212S sport boat comes with a surprisingly long list of standard equipment that confirms it as Yamaha’s most upscale of four models in its 21-Ft series. Yamaha offers a total of twenty-five models of sport, wake, and center console boats from nineteen to twenty-seven feet in six series.
The 212S is gorgeous, sporty, plush, and roomy with its full eight foot, six-inch beam and rides on what Yamaha calls a modified-V, but what others would call a deep-V with its twenty degree deadrise hull. It will be very quick out of the hole and into top speed with its standard twin TR-1, 1.8L High Output engines coupled with Yamaha’s Jet Drives. The 212S also incorporates Yamaha’s new Quiet Cruise sound dampening technology.
Manoeuvrability and handling will also be excellent through its standard Yamaha Advanced Responsive Handling Package which includes a suite of three innovative technologies: Yamaha’s patented Articulating Keel- a rudder-like device that moves in relation to the jet pump nozzles for increased directional stability, a three position No Wake Mode™ control which sets optimum engine speed in No Wake Zones, and the Thrust Directional Enhancer which directs water thrust at an optimum angle for more responsive handling at slow speeds.
High technology greets the driver with a standard in-dash Yamaha Connext® seven-inch high resolution glare-proof helm control system display. It integrates entertainment features with operational functions like cruise assist, engine readouts, and fuel management using the LCD touchscreen. Or, you can use the Joystick to control readouts on the icon driven interface. This screen incorporates what Yamaha refers to as a “Boat Wellness Function Display.”
A custom sporty tilt steering wheel fronts a high-tech looking dash. In addition to the Connext® screen and Joystick there is also a compass, depth finder, water temperature gauge, electronic speedometer, and Smartphone holder. The passenger console houses a Fusion AM/FM stereo with Bluetooth® capability with six speakers including two on the swim platform along with a stereo remote control. A USB/auxiliary input, two USB charge ports and a 12-volt power outlet are also provided.
The interior of the 212S is almost full surround seating in the cockpit and the bow. The driver and front passenger can each enjoy a high back swivel adjustable swivel captain’s chair with built-in headrest, fold-up armrests, and forward flip-up bolster. A U-shaped lounge completes the cockpit seating aft of the chairs and across the transom. A recessed centre upper section of the stern portion of this lounge facilitates handy access to the swim platform across the transom.
Through the center opening section of the high, curved surrounding windshield with extended side wings, bow seating consists of stretch-out bench lounge seats on each side with high padded backrests on the forward face of the two consoles. Long gunnel-mounted stainless steel handrails are provided as are standard bow filler insert cushions to add additional bow seating or to create a bow sunlounge.
The wide foredeck houses an anchor locker which doubles as storage for the telescoping bow boarding ladder. Storage is provided within driver and passenger consoles and beneath all hinged seat cushions in the cockpit and the bow. A cockpit in-floor storage compartment is ideal for waterskis, a wakeboard, etc.
The stern of the 212S features two platforms: the upper platform houses with two high back upholstered cushioned backrests for aft-facing seating with your feet on the integrated low to the water swim platform below. The upper platform also features a large wet storage compartment containing handy jet-pump cleanout ports. Both platforms are covered with fixed Marine-Grade Mat matching the snap-in teak-style Mat throughout the cockpit.
Other notable standard equipment includes a forward-swept folding aluminum wakeboard tower with Bimini™ top, dinette table with mounts in the cockpit and on the swim platform, walk-through bow doors, docking lights, integrated removable cooler, locking glove box, courtesy lighting, windshield rear view mirror, ski tow hook, and a tandem axle painted trailer with chrome wheels, aluminum fender step plates, swing-away tongue, and spare tire with mount.
The very few available options include a galvanized trailer, wakeboard racks, Yamaha Rock ‘n’ Tow tube, Magma® Newport™ gas grill, and a WakeSurf Package which includes the Yamaha Slingshot Coaster WakeSurf Board, rope, float, and carry bag along with the Yamaha WakeBooster™ that attaches to the stern tie downs to provide a larger, cleaner wake for surfing.
The refreshed 2020 Yamaha 212S sport boat comes complete with all the technology and amenities to provide you with all of the on-water fun you would want and expect.
