Boat Review by: Richard Crowder
Campion’s all-new EX22 Dual Console (DC) becomes the seventh model from sixteen to twenty-six feet in its Explorer series, one of five series from the Kelowna, BC builder’s impressive fleet. Campion is and has been for many years Canada’s largest builder and exporter of fiberglass pleasure boats.
Campion describes its Explorer series as “rugged workhorses,” and although this new EX22 DC is built to the same rugged standards as the other models in the Explorer series, if you chose not to add the optional fiberglass hardtop with five rod holders, the result is a very modern, sleek-looking bowrider you might never expect to be part of the Explorer series.
The EX22 DC rides on Campion’s proven second generation Apex2 dual-deadrise hull design of three-dimensional woven fiberglass bonded with enviro-friendly resin. The hull incorporates a composite stringer grid, floor, and transom with Kevlar laminate reinforcement in high impact areas of the keel. It is well equipped as a multi-purpose family-friendly boat suitable for all on-water pleasure activities from fishing to cruising to watersports.
The helm and dash of the EX22 is exciting and modernistic with the optional proprietary Campion Command System (CCS), an “electrical and touch system that puts everything at your fingertips.” It features a waterproof eleven-inch ultrabright colour vertical touchscreen displaying engine and systems controls, troubleshooting and maintenance functions, accessory switching, RGB lighting controls, stereo controls, and capable of third-party integration.
Standard on the dash is a speedometer, fuel gauge, and Kicker audio package. A stainless steel tilt steering wheel feeds standard Teleflex Sea Star Pro® hydraulic steering. The driver and passenger are provided with armchair-style high-back swivel bucket seats with armrests and fore and aft adjustment. Both of these seats may be equipped with cushioning AirWave™ pedestals and/or heating.
The passenger seat may be optionally replaced with a back-to-back fold down sleeper-style seat. The passenger-side console is a molded fiberglass head compartment with hinged door, built-in cabinetry with storage, and standard Porta Potti. A tinted frameless compound curve windshield with center opening section and extended side wings provides great protection from the elements and may be optionally outfitted with a driver side windshield wiper.
Additional cockpit seating is provided by a folding stern bench seat with sturdy stainless steel hardware. Folded down provides seating for cruising and folded up opens up the cockpit for ease of fishing. A non-skid, self-bailing fiberglass cockpit floor for easy cleaning is standard. Molded into the cockpit floor are a pair of fishboxes which may be alternatively used for simple storage. Centered in the floor is a rod storage locker with holders which doubles as a watersports accessory storage compartment.
Normal V-shaped surrounding bow seating has removable seat cushions to create a foredeck casting platform. Storage is provided beneath the seats and removable seat back cushions on the forward faces of the consoles offer forward facing lounging. A foredeck anchor locker is provided. Integrated docking lights are standard. A starboard side transom walk-thru provides access to the full-width integrated swim platform with slide-out telescoping stainless steel boarding ladder.
Additional notable standard equipment includes a large 139-litre wet bin/cooler with blue gelcoat and LED lighting, a pair of USB plugs, four 12-volt plugs, “DC” in-gel graphics package, eleven stainless cupholders, downrigger support brackets, portable cooler, and gunnel rod storage.
As mentioned, there are lots of additional available options to outfit your EX22 DC to enhance your on-water enjoyment. General enhancements include eight choices of hullside accent colours to which a Mini-Flake option may be added. Choose from three in-dash navigation/fishfinding screens; a Helix 7 or 10 Chirp Mega DI or SI, or a Solix 12 Mega SI GPS.
Add trim tabs with indicators, Rigid Industries LED underwater lighting package, anchor system with bow roller, Kicker® stereo upgrade package with amplifier, subwoofer, and stereo remote, RGB interior lighting package, in-dash depth sounder, two-bank battery charger, Campion Marine Deck Kit, bimini top, canvas window kit, and console, bucket seat, bow, cockpit, and trailering covers. Also select the Faria gauge package if you choose not to get the Campion Command System.
For enhanced cruising enjoyment, choose the bow filler cushion and an aluminum ski pole. The fisherman may want to add the aerated, pressurized, recirculating 02 Pro livewell, down rigger plugs, Cannon gunnel mounting track system, kicker motor mount, and raw water washdown. Whatever your primary on-water enjoyment, you may also want a powder coated or galvanized EZ Loader trailer with available swing-tongue and spare tire. ¬Factory pre-rigging for Mercury, Yamaha, or Suzuki outboards from 250 to 300 horsepower is also offered.
Campion’s Explorer EX22 Dual Console is a truly versatile pleasure boat well suited to whatever your intended enjoyment.
